Interior/Exterior is an ongoing project that I began in New York in 2004 and have continued to make new photographs for over the last six years. This project was born out of my attraction to the urban landscape as subject matter as well as my investigation into how a population can affect the spaces and structures they inhabit. Like much of my other work, Interior/Exterior aims to record the traces that industry, war, nature and time have left upon our urban spaces while drawing connections and obscuring differences between environments, whether foreign or familiar.

Most of the environments that I choose to photograph are places that I have returned to a number of times before actually making a picture. I have found this to be fundamental in my creative process - the ritual of returning and becoming familiar - to experience how a space is effected by the change of seasons and the presence or absence of people. A blank wall or an old stair case can tell you so much of a places history if approached as you would a particularly striking passage in a book, to be read and re-read.

Interior/Exterior as a body of work is informed and inspired by history, however, my process in creating this series, at its core, is about my own passage through time and trying to develop a better understanding of how spaces are lived in or how they can mature as we do. How spaces both interior and exterior react to neglect or over-use and in turn, how these spaces can determine how we live in them. A city cannot be understood by looking at its many facets in isolation; it is through these facets relationships to one another that we come to an understanding, creating a common language between person and thing.
